„I would suggest that if you grow up trying constantly to be an adult, a successful adult, you will be sick of being grown up by the time you’re old enough to drink.“ Marya Hornbacher
The first thing that comes to my mind is, that we are sad generation. It´s unbelieveable how much pressure we feel. Everyone says we grow up really fast. But why is that? My father says, that it is because we have free access to all the informations, which makes us informed about everything, from current affairs to health benefits of eating orange.
While this may be one of the reasons, I doubt it’s the main one. We are literally forced, to grow up that fast. We do not have a choice. I could describe teens as a time of life, where a child is thrown into the adulthood and the only thing he/she can do is to learn how to survive. We don’t have any lessons before entering this stage, where we are taught how to fit in, how to be accepted by others, and how to manage all that pressure. We just need to adjust, observe others and ´fake it until we become it´.
What I noticed (and hate) is seeing how influential media are. And now I don’t mean only social media, but everything – magazines, movies/tv shows. They are aware that we are in confusing stage of life, where we barely now what is happening, and they make profit out of it. Buy this, and you will be cool, wear this and you are doing teenaging correctly. But in the end, it is impossible to do it all. We will be always judged, no matter how much make up we wear or how expensive our clothes is.
How do they expect us to know what university we want to go to, or what we want to do for living at such a young age? We aren´t sure of anything, which makes us paranoid and creates trust-issues.
We are trying to be independent, but at the same time crave attention and support. There comes a point in life, when we no longer want to be said what to do. That is what creates the stereotype that teenagers don’t have good relationships with parents. Our relationship hasn’t changed. We just want to do things, mistakes, fail one hundred times and then in the end succced – all on our own.
There are moments of panic. I (and I heard others, too) panic about future, and panic that we are actually panicking about it. How will I be ever able to live on my own, study at university and work at the same time? What if I wont find good job? What if I get divorced, will I get my children into my care? Future is our biggest enemy and hope at the same time. Yes, we can fail, we may not find good job, or won’t live where we want to. BUT WHAT IF WE DO? What if this teen thing is just someting we have to bear, and once we are grown-ups we can be free, and live the way we want to?
We have so much power in our hands. I could just drop out of high school right now, go to London, live in motel and write pretty words. Or I could write perfect novel and become young , famous and successful person. We can do everything or nothing.
I have noticed, that school makes us really tired. The thing is, that it doesn´t mean we hate school. I actually enjoy high school. But it takes so much energy. There are days when we just need to deal with our personal things, rest, but we have to go, we have to have perfect grades, because grades mean future, and future is IMPORTANT. I dislike the fact, that the most important decisions about our life and future, are made during this time. We are different person every day, every year… We hate things we used to love and love things we used to hate. I can easily ruin my future by picking wrong college, or failing some important exam. And ´pay for it´during adulthood.
And there is, of course, pressure from ourselves. Each one of us wants to achieve big things, and each failing makes us believe we ruined it all.
“Compared to previous generations, recent high school graduates are more likely to want lots of money and nice things, but less likely to say they’re willing to work hard to earn them,” said Twenge, author of the book “Generation Me.”
I disagree. We want to work. But we also see all the opportunities this world can provide and we are scared we will end up with a job we hate. So yes, we may be picky about job and yes, we maybe want pretty things, and house, but it is because it provides stability. And as I mentioned, being so unsure of anything, we are all searching for something to hold onto.
But it is not like everything is unsure. I like the fact, that we are still considered young, so making mistakes is a bit more acceptable. This is the time of life, they make most movies about. But they are not always close to reality. To be honest, I don´t think we have that much fun, and nothing is as dramatic as they show.
And what do we do, when we have all this mess around us?
We distract ourselvers. Some people are more lucky than others. Some of us can just read, watch movies and spend hours on the internet. Others cope with life differently.
In the end, it is not that complicated. We just want to be okay. Pass those exams, be accepted by peers and do as little mistakes as possible.
And we all really are trying.
